EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
Healing from difficult life experiences can be challenging and is often accompanied by distressing symptoms and feelings. EMDR is an innovative therapeutic approach from which clients can process painful life events and situations that sustain discomfort in their lives. While our minds and bodies are naturally wired towards health, we sometimes get stuck in the process of healing from our emotional wounds. Once we remove the "stuck-ness," we can resume the healing process, which ultimately leads to happier and healthier living.
My role as a trained clinician in EMDR is to support you in developing an environment of internal safety while using detailed procedures to guide you back to the pathway for effective healing. The EMDR process starts with collecting your history. This includes gathering information about your life experiences, particularly those that are distressing and difficult to move on from. Once we've identified the target, I'll work with you to learn and use safe and healthy ways to manage emotional distress. We will then process the target (the distressing memory, event, experience, etc.) through rapid eye movements or bilateral stimulation. Throughout the process, I check in with you to assess your level of distress until you arrive at a place that feels emotionally comfortable and safe.
EMDR is a unique form of psychotherapy and may not be what most clients envision when thinking about the counseling process. EMDR can be a highly effective aid in the healing process. If you would like to know more about EMDR therapy and/or if this modality may be a fit for you, let's chat.
